New law for the Management Bodies of Protected Areas

After a long process of consultation and debate between the competent authorities, the environmental NGOs, the Ministry of Environment and Energy and citizens,  the Greek Parliament voted on February 8, 2018, the Law 4519 (Government Gazette 25 Α '/ 20.02.2018), which regulates all issues concerning the organization and operation of the Protected Areas Management Bodies.

This followed the Joint Ministerial Decision of the Ministries of Environment and Rural Development (Ref. 50 743 / 12.15.2017, GG 4432 B ') in December 2017, which revised the national list of the European Ecological Network NATURA 2000 in Greece.

With these two laws, the administration hopes to improve the status of protection, conservation and management of Greek Protected Areas, after years of political inertia and under pressure from the EU for effective protection and full implementation of environmental directives.

Whit the above mentioned law (4519) the Management Bodies are increased from 28 to 36 covering the whole of the network area in Greece.

The Ministry of Environment and Energy has already announced the elaboration of the specific environmental studies and the drafting of Presidential Decrees and Management Plans for all areas of the NATURA 2000 Network, with the completion of which is expected to improve the environmental situation of the protected areas in the country.
